OPAL: Online Programs for All (no longer active)

OPAL was an international collaborative effort by libraries and other organizations of all types to provide web-based programs and training for library users and library staff members.

These live events were held in online rooms where participants interacted via voice-over-IP, text chatting, synchronized browsing, and more.

Examples of OPAL public online programs included book discussion programs, interviews, special events, library training, memoir writing workshops, and virtual tours of special digital library collections.

Participating OPAL libraries develop and deliver online programs, events, and meetings using software from Talking Communities.

OPAL wss administered by TAP Information Services, a small company that helped organizations innovate. OPAL was founded in 2003 by the Alliance Library System, the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center, and the Illinois State Library Talking Book and Braille Service. OPAL ceased operating in 2012, but the archive of previously recorded programs is still available in the archive section of this website.

For more information about OPAL, please contact Tom Peters (email tpeters@tapinformation.com or phone 309-660-3648).
