Lively Book Discussion of Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an
Iowa Farm During the Great Depression by Mildred Armstrong Kalish
In this memoir, which was designated a 2007 Notable Book by the New York Times Book Review, Kalish
recounts the joys, hardships, and hard work of growing up on an Iowa farm during the 1930s. Life was
simpler then, centered around caring for animals, cooking, washing, gossiping, and digging a hole to China.
The Publishers Weekly review notes, "Simple, detailed and honest, this is a refreshing and informative read for
anyone interested in the struggles of average Americans in the thick of the Great Depression."

A Casual Conversation with Michael Stephens
The Casual Conversations series is designed to be up-close and personal from a respectable online distance.
While there are many conferences (in-person, online, and in-world) where librarians can hear leaders
in the field make formal presentations about interesting projects, there are few opportunities to hear
these same leaders discuss informally what they currently are working on, their future plans and goals,
the challenges and opportunities facing librarianship, their personal pet peeves, etc.
