The Monarch Award:
Illinois’ K-3 Children’s Choice Award
  • •  Designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with books, authors and illustrators.
  • •  Named in honor of the Monarch Butterfly, Illinois’ state insect which symbolizes growth, change and freedom, qualities that also characterize the emergent reader.

Eligibility for Participation
  • Schools serving K-3 students may participate.
  • Public libraries serving K-3 children may participate and may conduct voting for children who do not have access to the award program through a school.
  • Librarians, teachers, parents  or aides may administer the program.
  • Registration reminders are mailed each Spring.
  • Registration form for 2008 is on the website now!
  • Registration fees are used to fund printing, mailings, and expenses associated with the winning author/illustrator’s appearance.

Monarch Master List Selection
  • Nominees are reviewed based on the criteria.
  • Balance of fiction/nonfiction and picture books/chapter books/easy readers is considered as nominees are narrowed to 100.
  • Volunteer readers review in depth 10 of the 100 and submit written evaluations which are used to narrow to 50 nominees.
  • Approximately 50 readers attempt to read all 50 nominees before the face to face meeting and are assigned one book to review in depth and present.
  • Readers’ meeting selects the Master List of 20.
