13:40:33 [Tom Peters] http://www.librivox.org/

13:40:56 [Arlene] tom...could you pls tell me more about the sorry i hit the return   tom could you please tell us more about the thirty audiobook projects you just mentioned?

13:43:04 [Victoria] I don't know that we want to necessarily classify them for the patrons, but we should definitely know enought to direct them to sites that could be useful to them.

13:43:41 [Luca] Origami

13:43:57 [Luca] It's a tablet pc.

13:45:31 [Eric L] its more of an ultra small portable mini-tablet.... and we should be hearing from Microsoft about it on March 2nd (shortly after Apple's unveiling of products on the 28th...)

13:46:12 [Lori Bell] Eric, do you know what kinds of new products they will be introducing

13:46:23 [Lori Bell] anything to make things compatible with WMA?

13:46:25 [Luca] Apple's released a hi-fi boombox

13:46:31 [Eric L] and a new mac mini ;-)

13:46:45 [Eric L] ...but nothing related to WMA, naturally

13:51:51 [Arlene] at BCCLS (www.bccls.org) we are planning to do One Book BCCLS...probably in the Fall...we plan to select a book that is available in both print and downloadable formats and hope for discussion among patrons from our 73 public libraries...maybe as the finale to some adult summer reading clubs

13:52:25 [Eric L] Bergen County Cooperative Library System

13:52:45 [Victoria] I don't think our One Book programs have ever involved downloadable or audio books, but that is something to look into.

13:55:43 [Lori Bell] No, I think it is being more and more accepted

13:55:50 [Lori Bell] audio books as reading

13:56:18 [Lori Bell] Reading has almost become any interaction with anything that is a "book" whether it be print or electronic or graphic

13:57:01 [Lori Bell] An audio renaissance

13:57:14 [Lori Bell] Radio was most popular in the 30s and 40s

13:57:33 [Lori Bell] We seem to be enjoying an audio renaissance where there seems to be more and more demand for audio

13:58:19 [Lori Bell] demand for audio books, magazines, old-time radio, podcasts

13:58:28 [Victoria] I also think this is affected by the abridged/unabridged discussion.

14:00:29 [Ben Watson] I agree with you Tom.

14:02:56 [Victoria] I have really enjoyed this format.  I can't think of any other topics offhand, but it is a great way to conduct this type of seminar.

14:03:18 [Lisa from LibraryU] Thanks everyone.

14:03:23 [Luca] Bye Tom.  Thanks.

14:04:33 Ben Watson has left the session

14:05:50 [Victoria] Has anyone had experience with purchasing in a consortium?  How do you handle title selection?

14:12:20 [Lisa from LibraryU] We'll have to see if we can get some testimonials from the people who won them

14:12:34 [Victoria] We have discussed it, but we haven't made any purchases yet.  We were a little disappointed by the limited amount of titles.

14:12:36 [Lori Bell] that's a great idea

14:12:54 [Arlene] several of our libraries are buying a few devices and loaning them to the public

14:12:57 [Lisa from LibraryU] I think that's a great idea. I do that all the time with print books after I've bought them on vacation

14:13:50 [Arlene] one of our libraries got a small grant to puchase MP3 players for loan to the public

14:14:55 [Arlene] they are doing this to kick start the whole downloadable initiative

14:16:09 [Arlene] one library is buying a few for their patrons who already own iPods...so they don't have to buy an add'l device to listen to the audiobooks

14:17:25 [Victoria] I think that's a great idea!  I have an iPod and I was very disappointed that I can't download most books.

14:18:09 [Lori Bell] I haven't heard anything lately

14:21:04 [Lori Bell] I can check the podcasts

14:23:57 [Lisa from LibraryU] Hi Brianna!

14:24:06 [Lisa from LibraryU] See you all. Thanks.
